INSOMNIUM

Insomnium is a melodic death metal band from Joensuu, Finland, whose music also reveals links to other, neighboring metallic subgenres like doom, melancholy, and dark metal. Originally formed in 1997, the group released a pair of demos in 1999 and 2000 before signing a contract with England's Candlelight Records, and making their full-length debut via 2002's In the Halls of Awaiting CD. Two additional albums -- Since the Day It All Came Down and Above the Weeping World -- have since followed, in 2004 and 2006, respectively, and not only confirmed Insomnium's enduring passion for their chosen musical style, but also their stable lineup consisting of Niilo Sevänen (bass/vocals), Ville Friman (guitar), Ville Vänni (guitar), and Markus Hirvonen (drums).

THE DAY BEATLES DIED

The scene outside New York's spooky old Dakota apartment building on the evening of December 8, 1980, was as surreal as it was horrifying. John Lennon, probably the world's most famous rock star, lay semiconscious, hemorrhaging from four flat-tipped bullets blasted into his back. His wife Yoko Ono held his head in her arms and screamed (just like on her early albums). A few yards away a pudgy young man stood eerily still, peering down into a paperback book. Moments earlier he had dropped into a military firing stance - legs spread for maximum balance, two

TO LIVE IS TO DIE: LAST WORDS OF CLIFF BURTON

When a Man Lies He Murders Some Part of the World These Are the Pale Deaths Which Men Miscall Their Lives All this I Cannot Bear to Witness Any Longer Cannot the Kingdom of Salvation Take Me Home This song is a tribute to Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton, wh o died in a tour bus crash. It is instrumental except the spoken word piece near the end - this was a poem that Cliff wrote before he died The line, "These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives" comes from the book Lord Foul's Bane, Book One of the series "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever" by Stephen R. Donaldson. In the book, the main character decides to write a poem to amuse himself. The full poem is as follows: These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives: for all the scents of green things growing, each breath is but an exhalation of the grave. Bodies jerk like puppet corpses, and hell walks laughing. Metallica Singer James Hetfield explained to Moj

Boston Herald recently conducted a short interview with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY frontman Zakk Wylde. Herald: What was your relationship like with "Dime bag? Wylde: "He was my partner in six-string crime. He was a beautiful guy. A BLACK LABEL guy. He was one of the most beautiful souls you'd ever meet. If you were having a crappy day, he'd come in and light the room up. Aside from being one of the greatest guitar players ever, he was an even better person." Herald: What's been the reaction to the Dimebag tribute song "In This River"? Wylde: "I have to sing it every night and it's hard not to break down." Herald: You just pitched a pilot to MTV. What's it about? Wylde: "It's like rock boot camp. Their parents don't want them to be in bands. They wanted me to go in and talk to them. I said, 'I can't do that, man.' I j ust went in there and got them drunk, what every friendly, neighborhood rock guy would

Two Great Soft Songs From Slipknot

VERMILLION PT. 2 She seemed dressed in all of me, stretched across my shame. All the torments and the pain, leak through and covered me. I'd do anything to have her to myself, just to have her for myself. Now I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do When she makes me sad. She is everything to me, the unrequited dream, the song that no one sings, the unattainable. She's a myth that I have to believe in, all I need to make it real is one more reason. I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do When she makes me sad. But I won't let this build up inside of me, I won't let this build up inside of me, I won't let this build up inside of me, I won't let this build up inside of me. A catch in my throat, Choke, Torn into pieces, I won't, no, I don't want to be this, But I won't let this build up inside of me, I won't let this build up inside of me, I won't let this build up inside of me,

FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS: MEANING

This song describes a scene in the book "for whom the bell tolls" by ernest hemmingway. In this part of the book, a man known as el sordo is a guerilla leader fighting in the mountains of spain during the spanish civil war (which occured in the 1930s, when the second spanish republic came to power and spanish facists declared war on said republic). He ends up under attack and, massively outnumbered, he makes his last stand on a hilltop. He and his four remaining men hold off the attackers until planes come and bomb the hilltop, killing them all. The worst part of all this is that they were just trying to steal horses in order to retreat after aiding robert jordan, the novel's protagonist, in a highly improbable attack on a bridge required for the republic's forces to possibly take a city. As a result, sordo's men sort of have died for nothing, as their last stand will have little significance in the war or in history. This song comments on that, and on the f

LEGENDS WHO DIED AT THE AGE OF 27

Are we the lucky ones saved for another Day Or they the lucky ones who are taken away ? From Fates Warning (Ironmaiden) 1. Jimi Hendrix – The Jimi Hendrix Experience (died 1970) There was nothing about Jimi Hendrix that didn’t stick out; from his flamboyant outfits, to his left-handed guitar or his use of amp overdrive. After being turned down by The Rolling Stones, Jimi was introduced to Chas Chandler via Keith Richard’s girlfriend. They went on to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience a rock band that would revolutionize the genre forever. In 1969, he headlined the biggest music festival of all time, Woodstock. One year later, Jimi Hendrix was found dead after overdosing on pills and drowning in his own vomit (Asphyxiation). 2. Brian Jones – The Rolling Stones (died 1969) Brian Jones was the founder of a little known band named The Rolling Stones. While on the phone to secure a gig with a venue owner, Brian came up with the name “Rollin(g) Stones” by reading it off an alb

Top 10 Scariest Metal Bands Of All Time

10) Mercyful Fate: King Diamond's goofy Gene Simmons-like makeup and his consistent holding of upside down crosses and petulant screaming make him one of those people who you know you shouldn't invite over for dinner but you do anyway because you have a big heart. And then he throws the punchbowl at your head and your mom tells you that's the last time you can have friends over....but MOM, I'm 40! 9) Insane Clown Posse: Have people died at their concerts? Out of fear? Out of excitement? Out of boredom? Out of unsubstantiated rumors? Horrible rappers, but what a stageshow. 8) Venom: I don't like to say that anyone can bring "bad vibes" with them, but when you put on a Venom record you definitely feel a change in the air. It's like when my mom would make meatloaf and the whole house would smell bad because she didn't know how to make it and she put all these weird ingredients in it. That's how I got lead poisoning. What's your story? 7) GW

BURZUM: ONE MAN PROJECT

Burzum is the one-man project of Varg Vikernes (born Christian Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh), perhaps the most notorious figure in Norwegian black metal. Although Burzum has an unpredictably experimental bent — encompassing black metal, industrial, electronic, and dark ambient music — Vikernes will forever be associated with his conviction for the 1993 murder of former Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. It wasn't the first time Vikernes had run afoul of the law; he had been a suspect in arsons directed at historic Norwegian churches in Bergen, a perception not helped by his use of a post-fire photograph of the Fantoft Kirke church on the cover of Burzum's 1993 Aske EP. Coupled with Vikernes' racist, virulently anti-Judeo-Christian beliefs was a sort of nationalistic pride, a longing to return to the pre-Christian pagan culture and religion that had marked the glory days of the Vikings; this paganism became a frequently recurring theme in black metal circles, and led to the Norwe
