METALLICA AND H.P. LOVERCRAFT

THE CALL OF KTULU:

It is an instrumental inspired by the story "The Call Of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft. The author is a big influence on Metallica. In the book, the story says that mentioning the name Cthulhu (Verbally or written) will bring him closer. That's why Metallica used the name "Ktulu" and not "Cthulhu" for fear of the beast. This song was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton and original Metallica guitarist Dave Mustaine.

THE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE:

This is based on Cthulhu short stories by H.P. Lovecraft, an early-20th century American writer. These stories depict a certain scary monster dubbed by Lovecraft as the Cthulhu, which is the "Thing That Should Not Be. "The specific story by H.P. Lovecraft that this song references is The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Written in 1936, it was Lovecraft's only story that was released as a book when he was alive. His other short stories were published during his lifetime in a magazine called Weird Tales.

ALL NIGHTMARE LONG:

This song was an attempt to get back to the H.P. Lovecraft mythos with 'Thing That Should Not Be,' 'The Call Of Ktulu.' This was about the hounds of Tindalos, these wolves that hunt through their nightmares and the only way you can get away from them is stay with angels. You can't even escape through sleep. The music video, which does not feature the band, is a mockumentary depicting a sequence of fictional events following the historic 1908 explosion in Tunguska, Siberia. Guitarist Kirk Hammett purchased the original animated film from a Russian fan for $5.
